2024 arrivals and recovery

Vietnam’s 2024 international visitor total was more than 17.5 million. The annual increase was 39.5% compared with 2023, while the total stood at 97.6% of the pre-pandemic 2019 level. These are annual arrival figures, so they describe entries during calendar year 2024 rather than the number of unique people.

The annual result was consistent with a recovery that became visible early in the year. The first quarter reached more than 4.6 million international visitors, up 72% year on year and 3.2% above the first quarter of 2019. By the end of the first four months, arrivals had reached 6.2 million, 3.9% above the same period of 2019. The first five months totaled nearly 7.6 million arrivals, up 64.9% year on year and 3.9% above the same period of 2019. The first half exceeded 8.8 million, up 58.4% year on year and 4.1% above the comparable 2019 period. By the first seven months, Vietnam had nearly 10 million international arrivals, 51% more than in the same period of 2023. Around 12.7 million visitors arrived during the first nine months, about 43% more year on year, leaving the period just 1% below the same period of 2019. How visitors arrived

Air travel was the principal route into Vietnam in 2024. More than 14.8 million international visitors arrived by air, representing 84.4% of the annual total. Road crossings accounted for 2.5 million arrivals, or 14.2%, while sea arrivals totaled 248.1 thousand, or 1.4%. [Viet Nam records more than 17.5 million international visitor arrivals in 2024]

The monthly data also show different recovery patterns by transport mode. Vietnam received more than 1.5 million international visitors in January 2024. Air arrivals reached 1.29 million, 10.2% above the same month in 2019. Sea arrivals reached 48.3 thousand, twice the January 2019 level, while land arrivals reached 60% of the January 2019 level. These figures describe the route used for each recorded arrival, not a ranking of airports, ports, or border gates. They also make clear that the national recovery was principally air-led: air accounted for more than four out of every five annual international arrivals.

Where Vietnam’s international visitors came from

Asia was the largest regional source of international visitors in 2024, accounting for 79.6% of the total. Europe contributed 11.3%, the Americas 5.7%, Oceania 3.1%, and Africa 0.3%. [Viet Nam records more than 17.5 million international visitor arrivals in 2024]

South Korea and China were the two leading individual markets. South Korea sent 4.5 million visitors, representing 26% of all 2024 international arrivals. China sent 3.7 million, representing 21.3%. Together, those two markets accounted for nearly half of the annual total when their stated shares are combined.

Other reported 2024 source-market totals included 780 thousand visitors from the United States, 711 thousand from Japan, 501 thousand from India, 495 thousand from Malaysia, 491 thousand from Australia, 475 thousand from Cambodia, and 418 thousand from Thailand. [Viet Nam records more than 17.5 million international visitor arrivals in 2024]

The concentration in the leading markets was already visible in the first half. South Korea supplied 2.2 million visitors in the first six months, or 25.8% of arrivals, while China supplied 1.8 million, or 21.4%. During January–April, South Korea supplied 1.6 million, or 25.8%, and China supplied 1.25 million, or 20%. Taiwan contributed 418 thousand arrivals during those four months. The first two months provide another snapshot of market composition: South Korea sent 844 thousand visitors, or 27.7% of arrivals; China sent 538 thousand; Taiwan sent 198 thousand; and the United States sent 156 thousand. In January alone, South Korea supplied 418 thousand arrivals, or 27.6% of the monthly total. The monthly and quarterly recovery

Vietnam recorded 1.53 million international visitors in February 2024, and nearly 1.6 million in March. April brought 1.55 million visitors, May nearly 1.4 million, and June more than 1.2 million. July reached 1.15 million, up 10.9% year on year, while August reached 1.43 million. September delivered 1.27 million arrivals, up 20.9% from September 2023. October reached 1.42 million, and November reached 1.7 million, the highest monthly total reported for the year. China’s October arrivals were up 130.4% year on year, while China reached 3.0 million arrivals in the first ten months and 3.3 million in the first eleven months. For context, Vietnam recorded 12.6 million international visitors in 2023, 3.5 times the 2022 total. December 2023 was the strongest month of that year at 1.37 million arrivals, and every month in the second half of 2023 exceeded 1 million. South Korea supplied nearly 3.6 million visitors in 2023, or 28%, while China supplied 1.7 million; together they accounted for 42% of arrivals. [International visitors to Vietnam reach 12.6 million arrivals in 2023, increased 3.5 times to 2022]

Domestic travel and tourism receipts

International arrivals are only one part of Vietnam’s travel market. Vietnam welcomed 108 million domestic visitor trips in 2023 and set a target of 110 million domestic visitor trips for 2024. The 2023 figure is a count of visitor trips, not necessarily unique domestic travelers. [Vietnam aims to attract 17 - 18 million international visitor arrivals in 2024]

The same 2024 target statement estimated total tourism receipts at 678 trillion VND in 2023. It also recorded 19 World’s Leading Awards and 54 Asia’s Leading Awards for Vietnam in 2023. These awards are recognition counts, while the receipts figure is an estimate; they should not be treated as measures of visitor volume. [Vietnam aims to attract 17 - 18 million international visitor arrivals in 2024]

Vietnam’s 2024 target was 17 to 18 million international arrivals, alongside the domestic target of 110 million visitor trips. The reported full-year international result of more than 17.5 million therefore falls within that stated target range. Hanoi as a major urban tourism market

Hanoi recorded 25.3 million visitors during January–November 2024. Of that total, 5.7 million were international visitors and 19.7 million were domestic tourists. The city’s international total exceeded its target of 5.5 million, while international visitors rose nearly 36% year on year and domestic tourists rose 6.3%. [Ha Noi welcomes 25 million tourists in 11 months]

Hanoi’s tourism revenue during January–November 2024 reached nearly VND100 trillion. In November alone, the city welcomed nearly 2.2 million tourists, including 680,800 international visitors. The average hotel occupancy rate in Hanoi during November was 67%. [Ha Noi welcomes 25 million tourists in 11 months]

These Hanoi figures use a different geography and measurement period from the national international-arrival totals. Hanoi’s January–November visitor count includes both domestic and international tourists, whereas the national series above focuses on international visitor arrivals into Vietnam. Keeping those scopes separate is essential when comparing the numbers.
