2024 tourism scale
Khanh Hoa’s full-year results provide the broadest measure of the tourism economy around Nha Trang. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism reported more than 10,600,000 visitors in 2024. That total was 45.5% higher than in 2023, indicating that the year’s increase was substantial rather than marginal.
The same Vietnam National Authority of Tourism figures put international visitors at more than 4,500,000. International arrivals rose 89.3% compared with 2023, almost twice the overall visitor growth rate. This difference shows that overseas demand was a particularly important part of the 2024 expansion.
Tourism revenue was estimated at nearly VND 52,272 billion for the year. Revenue increased 53.9% from 2023 and exceeded the set target by 30.4%, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism. The visitor and revenue measures therefore moved in the same direction, while revenue growth was stronger than total arrival growth.
Before the final results were reported, Khanh Hoa’s 2024 target was 9,000,000 tourists, including 3,000,000 international tourists, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism. The target breakdown also specified 6,000,000 domestic visitors and 3,000,000 international visitors. The final full-year total of more than 10,600,000 visitors was therefore above the original overall target.
Cruise travel was another part of the annual plan. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism reported an expectation of about 43 international cruise ship calls in 2024. That is a planned call count, not a count of individual cruise passengers, so it should be read separately from the visitor-arrival totals.
International and domestic markets
The first nine months of 2024 show how the market mix developed before the full-year result. The Khanh Hoa Tourism Portal reported 9,000,000 total tourists during that period, up 57.9% year on year. International tourists accounted for 3,600,000 of the total and grew 147.9% year on year. Domestic tourists reached 5,400,000, an increase of 27.2% year on year.
These figures place international visitors at 40% of the first-nine-month total and domestic visitors at 60%. That percentage split is calculated directly from the reported 3,600,000 and 5,400,000 counts. It describes the January-to-September period only and should not be treated as a separate full-year market share.
Progress against the province’s plans was also uneven by market. The first nine months achieved 100% of the annual tourist plan, according to the Khanh Hoa Tourism Portal. International arrivals exceeded plan by 20%, while domestic arrivals reached 90% of plan. This means the international component had already passed its planned level by that point, whereas the domestic component had not yet reached its target.
The milestone was marked by the 9-millionth tourist celebration. The Khanh Hoa Tourism Portal identified the arrival as Vietnam Airlines flight VN441 from Incheon, carrying 180 passengers. The flight detail connects the milestone event with an international route, but the 180 passengers on that flight should not be added to the province-wide arrival total.
The international rebound was also visible in the third quarter. International tourists were estimated at 1,200,000 in Q3 2024, up 75.2% year on year, according to the Khanh Hoa Tourism Portal. Domestic tourists were estimated at 2,600,000, up 15.5% year on year. For the quarter, the two estimates sum to the separately reported total of 3,800,000 tourists.
Quarterly momentum and revenue
The Khanh Hoa Tourism Portal estimated 3,800,000 total tourists in Q3 2024, a 29.7% year-on-year increase. The quarter’s estimated tourism revenue was VND 18,092 billion, up 29% year on year. Both measures describe the same three-month period, but the revenue figure is an estimate rather than a finalized annual result.
The quarter-level market counts help explain the total. Of the estimated 3,800,000 Q3 visitors, 1,200,000 were international and 2,600,000 were domestic. International visitors represented about 31.6% of the quarter’s total and domestic visitors about 68.4%, calculated from the reported estimates. The quarterly composition was therefore still domestic-led even as overseas growth was faster.
The first nine months provide a larger comparison point: 9,000,000 total tourists, including 3,600,000 international and 5,400,000 domestic visitors. The Q3 estimate represented about 42.2% of the first-nine-month total. These are overlapping periods, so the comparison indicates the scale of Q3 within January-to-September activity rather than adding the figures together.
Revenue also appears at several time scales. Q3 revenue was estimated at VND 18,092 billion, while the full-year 2024 revenue estimate was nearly VND 52,272 billion. The full-year figure comes from the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, and the quarterly figure comes from the Khanh Hoa Tourism Portal. They should be treated as source-specific estimates for different periods.
Tet and the first half of the year
Tet 2024 generated 206,000 visitors over seven days, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism. The holiday total included more than 50,500 international visitors and 155,500 domestic visitors. Visitor volume was more than 26% higher than during the previous Tet holiday.
Tet tourism revenue was estimated at more than VND 959.1 billion. Because the holiday lasted seven days, this figure represents a concentrated holiday period rather than a monthly or annual average. The reported domestic and international counts together account for the stated 206,000 visitors when the international figure is understood as “more than” 50,500.
For the first half of 2024, the Khanh Hoa Tourism Portal reported 5,200,000 overnight visitors. The period also attracted 2,400,000 international tourists, and tourism revenue was about VND 26,072 billion. The overnight-visitor measure and the international-tourist measure are different indicators, so neither should be substituted for the other.
The first-half international count represented about 46.2% of the reported overnight-visitor total. This is a descriptive ratio between two published measures from the same period, not a claim that every overnight visitor can be classified by the same counting method. The portal’s wording and measurement labels remain important when comparing the figures.
Monthly accommodation demand
Monthly indicators from the Khanh Hoa Tourism Information Center show how demand changed through 2024. In January, the province recorded 1,844,688 overnight-stay days and an average room occupancy rate of 45.99%. Total tourist service volume was 713,600.
In February, overnight-stay days were 1,578,998. The figure was lower than January’s reported overnight-stay total, but it is still a standalone monthly accommodation measure and does not establish a trend for the entire year.
By April, overnight-stay days reached 1,659,311. In May, the measure rose to 2,318,367, while average room occupancy reached 59.73%. May’s total tourist service volume was 843,268. The month therefore combined a higher overnight-stay count with a higher service-volume figure than the January values reported by the same source.
June recorded 2,270,642 overnight-stay days and average room occupancy of 56.61%, according to the Khanh Hoa Tourism Information Center. Total tourist service volume was 861,774. Compared with May, June had 47,725 fewer overnight-stay days, 3.12 percentage points lower average occupancy, and 18,506 more units of total tourist service volume.
The highest supplied monthly occupancy figure came later in the year. Average room occupancy reached 85.10% in August 2024, according to the Khanh Hoa Tourism Information Center. This is 25.37 percentage points above the May occupancy figure and 28.49 percentage points above June’s figure. Occupancy is a rate, so it should not be combined with overnight-stay days as though both were visitor counts.
Travel companies, cruises, and sightseeing
Travel-company activity increased across the monthly figures that are available. Travel companies served 83,546 tourists in January, 94,226 in February, and 155,712 in April, according to the Khanh Hoa Tourism Information Center. In May, the number reached 162,849, then rose to 205,204 in June.
The June travel-company total was 121,658 higher than January’s, based on the reported monthly counts. It was also more than twice January’s figure. These values describe tourists served by travel companies, not all visitors to Khanh Hoa, so they should not be used as a replacement for province-wide arrival totals.
Cruise tourism contributed 16,322 visitors in January and 12,000 in May. The two reported monthly values are not a complete annual cruise series, but they show that cruise traffic was present in both months. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism’s expectation of about 43 international cruise ship calls for 2024 uses a different unit: ship calls rather than visitors.
Sightseeing-tour volume was 723,421 in January and 1,563,447 in May, according to the Khanh Hoa Tourism Information Center. The May figure was 840,026 higher than January’s reported volume. Sightseeing-tour volume is an activity measure and may include service activity that does not correspond one-for-one with unique tourists.
Taken together, these indicators describe a destination with strong growth at the province-wide level, a particularly rapid international recovery, and pronounced changes in accommodation demand. The monthly occupancy peak of 85.10% in August sits alongside the first-nine-month total of 9,000,000 tourists, while the full-year 2024 result reached more than 10,600,000 visitors. Each statistic remains tied to its stated period, geography, source, and measurement type.
